Considered one the most representative filmmakers of Hollywood’s Golden Age he valued story over flamboyant cinematography and his subject matter often pushed the boundaries of mainstream entertainment. His themes tend to circle around characters defined by their occupations, class conflict and uniforms as a symbol . Although he was versatile throughout his career he certainly was instrumental in the development of the noir genre.
He won 2 Academy Awards for Best Director and was nominated to 6 more, while winning or being nominated 13 more times for his screenwriting.
