Together with his brother Ethan , they are recognized as a talented brother act of filmmakers known for their stylish irreverent films that combine elements of comedy and drama and often feature eccentric characters and convoluted plots. Their movies-within-movies usually display amusing camera movements, richly textured landscapes, and talented performers spouting witty dialogue. From the duo though Joel is the outgoing visualist that stresses physical actions and likes using graphic physical fluids on the screen.
He won 1 Academy Awards for Best Director and was nominated to 2 more, while winning or being nominated 12 more times for producing or screenwriting .
