Regarded as an “actor's director” due to the nature of how he worked with them and his films were concerned with personal or social issues making him one of the most honored and influential directors in Broadway and Hollywood history however his testimony at the time of the Hollywood Black list brought him negative controversy in the industry.
He won 2 Academy Awards as a Director and was nominated for another 3 while garnering 2 other nominations for writing and producing. Five of his films made it to our All-Time Best Films list.
