Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra follow the story of an indigenous family who, due to American demand for marijuana in the 1970’s, get involved in a war of control of the business, setting the origins of the drug trafficking in Colombia and putting their lives, culture and traditions at stake. Gallego and Guerra infuse an anthropological angle and magical realism to the crime genre with political commentary of the annihilation of a culture to global capitalism displaying unusual visual and thematic richness .
It was the official entry for Colombia and was shortlisted for the Foreign Film category at the Academy Awards
