Japanese filmmaker and painter (1910-1998).

Regarded as one of the most important and influential film-makers in the history of cinema Kurosawa became known by combining the Japanese ancient traditions with a relatively modern, Western twist spanning a career from the Second World War to the early nineties. Kurosawa displayed a bold, dynamic style marked by a number of innovative devices and techniques usually following themes dealing with master-disciple relationships, heroic champions, cycles of violence in history and/or weather as a symbol.
He was nominated for 1 Academy Award as director while winning a Lifetime Honorary Award.
Four of his films made it to our All-Time Best Films list.
